North Island Lodge Report: June 17, 2009

June 17, 2009

Hello again to all! We are now off to the races here in Beal Cove, Langara Island.  I would like to start off by apologizing for the lack of reports so far this season. Setup is always a crazy time of year for us as we iron out the finer details around the lodge. That being said, the lodge is looking great and the crew could not be more positive on the season to come. Our first group is currently on the water enjoying the great weather, calm conditions, and to cut to the chase, lots of fish...So, now that I have your attention!

The guides were going a little stir crazy not being able to wet a line as I kept them too busy with projects around the lodge. Thursday their first test fishery, the results were nothing short of incredible. After just an hour of fishing I heard the radio crackle “Old School”, DJ’s subtle way of telling me the fish were indeed here. We had heard lots of positive reports but this was the confirmation we needed. Double headers and pumped up guides made us wonder if we had possibly missed the boat a little. Seeing multiple Chinook in the 18-30lb range produced a sigh of relief as our June fishery returns to usual numbers.

Our first official day of the 2009 season was certainly one to remember. Bait covered the usual haunts and hungry salmon were not far behind. Full totes and smiles sent a message across our dock that the Langara Island tradition continues. Although we still think salmon populations are as predictable as the DOW or TSX today; in the world of salmon fishing, it’s currently a bull market and we are loving it!  Sure it’s only day one but we look forward to the connections and memories that follow; father and son, husband and wife, and business rapport. It is all happening now and we’re happy to be in the mix.

The Spring Salmon Challenge is officially underway and we have our first entry of 2009. The current leader is as follows:

June 15th, 2009
North Island Lodge
Angler: Anders Jerner
Length: 41 in
Girth:    25 in
Calculated Weight: 32 lbs
Guide: Tyson Reid

This is the start we were looking for. From all of us here at North Island, we look forward to seeing you soon.

Todd McIntyre
