North Island Lodge Report: July 17, 2009

July 17, 2009

Wow! What a busy week here at North Island Lodge. Double shifting as guide, a series of unexpected visitors, and lots of big fish as mid-season mayhem kicks in.

It has been “The Westside Story” lately. The spectacular weather has allowed guests to explore the entire island. The Langara Lighthouse has been the most productive location for Chinook and the halibut fishing has not disappointed. Coho are thick and growing in size, with the seasons largest to date being Jamie Willoughby’s 18lb beauty.

Ken Beaty, manager of the Outpost, had me out for a late morning fish. A report he’ll be posting soon. I asked him to show me how he’s been adding photos to his fantastic reports. I think I have it figured out so I’ll let the photos tell the story….

The dock is buzzing after the afternoon tide.

Tyee!!! Darlene Andres shows off her 35lber with husband Eugene who stayed with us for a week long trip.

How do you weight a 218lb halibut?..with great difficulty! Dock Manager Katie knows it’s going to be a busy night.

NIL staff; DJ, Kauri, Gina-Lee and Lindsay ham it up for a group shot. DJ reminds everyone not to forget about the salmon fishing, pictured here with Len Whitney’s 38lber.

The halibut bite continues with two more monsters caught this week including John Sobey’s 235lber and Todd Kepler choosing to release a 260+ beast beside the boat after several guides had a peek to estimate its size….Well done Todd!

Last week saw a few Tyee but anglers are working hard for them. At the moment, schools of herring are thick at the Lighthouse but Chinook fishing was spotty this morning. It is a different story for the Coho, which are everywhere and snapping up any cut-plug in sight. All this herring in the area should bring in a fresh run of Chinook into the area

I just read Screamer’s Clubhouse report and had to laugh. Thanks buddy, but who’s Red Fisher?…Must have been before my time.

See you soon.
