North Island Lodge Report: August 4, 2009

August 4, 2009

The North West winds have finally given us a break. For a good 6 days, we were sure thankful to have Langara Island providing some relief from the seemingly endless wind.

The Borton group found a total of 5 Tyee doing tight circles in the lee at Coho Point, Boulder Bay and Guinia Pt. Once again everyone got their fill of coho but the bite for Chinook was a little spotty. Guide Brent stuck to the classic Guinia Pt. tack (aka: The Detroit Iron), thoroughly convinced that he would eventually strike gold. Who’s to argue with that logic, knowing the countless Tyee class salmon caught there over the years. His game plan worked, with Jerry Hovde landing a 50lb monster, so far North Island’s largest Chinook in 2009. After plucking away at Chinook in the 20’s, Brent also guided Brad White into a 39.5lb Chinook on the same tack just 3 days later..Do I see a pattern here?

Jerry Hovde realizes it’s not easy holding a 50lber in position for a photo.

Brad White is all smiles holding his 39.5 Tyee

The Sea lions are getting their share of Chinook as well, frustrating guides and guests. They’re extremely aggressive and fearless right now, something we’ve never seen to this extent, at least in my time here. I hear the stories from guides daily how they’ve watched their favorite lure, Chinook, and 150 yards of line disappear in seconds. While releasing fish, please be aware that a Sea lion can come out of nowhere, especially if you plan on hanging over the side with a fish in hand!

Next week looks very promising; large Chinook rolling in daily, a decent weather forecast, and more opportunity to explore the waters of Langara Island in search of Tyee.

I’ll let you know how it unfolds.
