North Island Lodge "Man of the year Q & A"

August 4, 2012

July 31st marks an important day on Langara Island and at North Island Lodge. D.J. Shinduke our most senior guide at the Lodge celebrated his 40th Birthday. While its difficult to describe and sometimes hard to see from an outside prospective, DJ has played an extremely important role in cultivating and preserving a guide culture and environment at North Island lodge that is second to none ...

I had a chance to sit down with DJ with a few questions to delve deeper into the psyche of this 20 year veteran of Langara Island and here is what we found!

Q: Firstly happy 40th birthday DJ firstly you've spent 20 years thats half your life working with North Island Lodge you obviously enjoy it here - what do you like most about working at North Island?

DJ: Well the size of the lodge .. the fact that its small the fact that it only holds 24 people. Everything is close by you got the dock shack here the scale there but most of all its the camaraderie working with you guys the tightness of our crew and the clients that keep coming back year after year.

Q: Can you still keep your rod tip up after all these years?

DJ: I sure can ... I just dont get much of a chance to use it ..

Q: Being an experienced of a fisherman as you are you could have guided at any location out of any boat .. whats kept you coming back?

DJ: Well that was kind of in the first question .. (sigh) ... but again ya .. again the fishing here on Langara .. I'd like how everything is so handy here and the guests that I've guided that I get to see every year ..... and you guys.

Q: You've seen Langara Island in the glory days when catching and killing big fish was the norm .. how have you seen it change in your years and what would you change to preserve it for future generations of fisherman?

DJ: I have seen it change over the years .. fishing has become more of a challenge. The size and numbers aren't like they where 20 years ago. I think we have to put a conscious effort into ensuring we are releasing larger fish so they can continue to reproduce and that we are consistently investing in salmon enhancement programs and organizations like the salmon foundation and sport fish institute.

Q: If you could have anything for your 40th birthday what would it be?

DJ: A neeew boat. A new big and better boat ... with a top ..

It can go without saying but its easy to see why some guests continue to coming back to North Island Lodge year after year .....

Happy Birthday DJ!
