North Island Lodge "Everybody gets whales!"

June 21, 2013

We've recently had the pleasure of hosting an amazing group. Richard Locks "Reeling for Ronnie" fishing derby. An absolute blast and for a great cause "Ron Brown Memorial Scholarship fund". Proud to announce they raised over $12,600 through sponsors and the derby contestants for this charity. Please stay tuned for our next blog as we are compiling a recap of the event and to elaborate more on our friend Ron Brown. Fishing has been typical for June. A great number of Chinooks being boated and Cohos already in abundance. Ive had the pleasure of fishing with a great guest of ours John First and his three sons. Jeremiah and John Pauls first trip to up to Langara and needless to say it has been an experience of a lifetime for the boys ... and myself.Running back from fishing at Lacey Island we happened upon on a pod of orcas. We quickly shut off the engine and watched as the pod slowly closed in on our vessel. Before we knew it we where surrounded by over 30 killer whales as large females a few bull males and about a half a dozen calves frolicking along side. A little close for comfort ..

As they closed in our us ...

Another decent shot as they passed on through ...

Nick First and his brother John Paul. We've had a couple very decent fish on in the past few days. We've also "released" a couple. As the old saying goes ... this is why they call it fishing not catching. My guest John First swears by his water melon apex lures. Pictured below is a respectable 23lb Chinook caught on the Apex lure.

We also had a great time Halibut fishing with the boys. With recently implemented halibut regulations we've realized how incredibly difficult it is to measure a larger halibut while on the line ... next to your boat. The department of fisheries and oceans has passed a new regulations regarding halibut retention. Catch limit is one per day / two per trip. One must be less then 126 cm and the other less then 83 cm. These fish will not lay flat while in the water next to your boat making it fairly difficult to get an accurate read on one measuring close to these marks. We did manage to muster up a few that fit the bill perfectly.

And a few giant yellow eyes to boot ...

John is already booked in for a few more trips with us this summer and Im looking forward to seeing his group again at North Island Lodge. "You never know" .... he said I might be able to talk my wife into coming on a trip. from 54°14′03″N 133°01′13″W,Pat Cullen | NIL Fishing Guide | WCFC Sales & Client Servicespatrickcullen@westcoastfishingclub.com
