North Island Lodge "DJ's 47lb June Chinook"

June 11, 2013

North Island Lodge has officially begun its 2013 season on Langara Island, Haida Gwaii. With 100% guide return on our dock and a few fresh new faces working inside the lodge we are fully prepared and geared up and ready to rock and roll!

Early reports have suggested an abundant run this year and so far it has been just that. I was very excited to welcome a group from West Vancouver who brought there sons up for a father and son fishing excursion to celebrate their high school graduation. I had the pleasure of fishing with Steve, Liam, Mark and Steve's son Nik.Steve and Nik pictured below fishing coho point.

After a wet day on the water Nik, Mark, Steve and Brendan showcase their prized catch.

The weather was excellent.... for the most part. We had a taste of just about everything on this trip from torrential down pours to blue skies and calm seas fishing the Hali grounds. But all in all consistent fishing seamed to be the word to describe the last week for our guests. Coho point through to Andrews on the east side of Langara have been locations of choice for our fleet with numerous Chinooks being boated sized between 15 and 25lbs in size. With that said the odd monster has been lurking around as Guide Jarod and his guest Rob Jenkins found out as they boated and released a 43lb chinook. Great job on the release guys!!!

I'm very happy to welcome back Greg Jessup and his friends from Ontario this trip and we had a great day of fishing. Boating a number of Chinooks as well as a coho. Massive loads of bait showing up on the sounder. We had a terrific hit on our port side rod and it was on .. with three deep runs we had a feeling this could be something with some size to it .. it wasn't to be. Soon after breaching the surface with a few thrashing head-shakes the hooks had popped out ... at this time I hear cheers from DJ's boat not too far away. ... "PAT get over here" We already had our gear out of the water so we approached to see DJ and his guest, George Peck, taking a few photos of a MONSTER June Chinook. Measured out to 47lbs we moved in for a quick peek and got a few stills of DJ releasing this beauty.

While I tried to utilize my HD contour cam .. Ive been a little out of practice. I was able to retrieve a few stills.

I've got a feeling this will be a season to remember. Back on the water bright and early tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing what the day holds.from 54°14′03″N 133°01′13″W,Pat Cullen | NIL Fishing Guide | WCFC Sales & Client Servicespatrickcullen@westcoastfishingclub.com
