NIL update: Burnt ears and busted knuckles

June 26, 2012

What a fantastic week at North Island Lodge. The sun broke out during the first few days of the trip and while it doesnt happen too often our guide crew and guests had a chance to shed some layers lather up our mugs and ears with high level SPF sunscreen, sit back and enjoy some fantastic fishing weather in the best seats on Langara ...

Fishing has been "sporadic" at times but we've all had great opportunities and boating the occasional Chinook is as exciting as ever.

"Keep an eye on that rod tip" was a phrase seeming to be on repeat. With an abundance of bait moving in around Lacey Island and a phenomenal show from hump back whales, it was all too easy to catch yourself in a mesmerized daze as whales breached and fed. Displaying their tales well above the surface of the water like images stolen from post cards. Im positive between these incredible humpback performances a bite or two where missed but thus being the price you pay for admission to the Langara Island whale show.

Measuring between 40 and 50 feet and weighing up to 79,000 lbs humpback whales travel over 25,000 kilometers every year to return for the summer in the waters of Langara Island to feed off krill and bait fish.

This picture was taken from a WCFC guest near the Lighthouse on Langara Island.

During the winter months they will return to mate in tropic and sub tropic waters to breed and give birth.

"There's one!" ... Great job on the Tyee!!

All smiles at North Island Lodge ...

Once again we all had a great time with this group and look forward to seeing them again next year. With some long term guests like Ken P it was interesting to hear stories about what things where like 20 years ago.

I spent the majority of my time fishing with Nick and his family friend Sean and it was truly a great experience. Sean was really hands on and eager to learn some of the techniques of landing a Chinook. It's always good being there to help someone land their first.

Fishing with guys like this is a quick reminder of why we love our jobs so much. The opportunity to meet people from different walks of life coming from the opposite side of the continent and yet fishing becomes this common bond that can break down any barrier and it gives people the chance to work together and experience something new and exciting.

Good ol Kentucky boys Orville and Andy with their guide and friend DJ.

Special thanks here to Ken P for providing some great photos from the trip. Take care Ken we look forward to seeing you again next year!
