By Deepwater DonAugust….already? How can that be? The big fish are here in increasing numbers yet the season is now on the home stretch. And with an estimated one million Columbia River-bound Chinook Salmon reported to still be out there somewhere fattening up for their autumn migration, I have high hopes for great fishing right up until the End Of Season Party September 11-14 at The Clubhouse.

I won’t inundate you with the details about the fishing at present, as Screamer and Jordan Knight have both recently filed reports that tell the story about a continuation of Tyees and lots of Coho. The Halibut fishing remains good too, especially at The Outpost, which has just three weeks to go until the sun sets on the last group of guests at Port Louis.

Overall friends, there is still plenty of action in store for 2016, including the newest special event trip for The West Coast Fishing Club, which is now just 10 days away. That would be the Coastal Culinary Experience that goes August 14-18 at The Clubhouse. Guests of this long-sold-out gastronomic odyssey will see the bar raised very high once again on the food side of things, including special guest chefs and a helicopter trip to a deserted beach for a lunch far beyond even the wildest imaginations.

Next up after that on the special events calendar is the 11th annual Fishing For Kids Tournament August 28-31. That trip too is long sold out but here is a news flash anyway – Alan Frew, the Scotland-born lead singer of Juno award-winning Canadian rock artists Glass Tiger, will be the musical guest for both the pre-event reception at Reflections Lounge in the Hotel Georgia and up at The Clubhouse as 44 seasoned anglers focus on catching and releasing some big fish and raising another million or so for the Canucks Autism Network. With the bevy of Tyees being reported every day at Langara Island right now, the competition could be tighter than usual.

Speaking of Tyees, Nicholas Evans finished this most recent trip on top of the leader board at The Clubhouse with a caught and released fish of just over 42 pounds. Mark Gucker and Bill Cooke both grabbed 36-pound Chinook Salmon and, like many of the other guests, also netted several Coho including some well over 10 pounds. Steve Dummermuth Sr. caught and released a 35.5lb Tyee followed by Mark Northcutt who did the same with a fish just a few ounces under 34 pounds. Double honours go out to Kelly Elliott who picked up a 32 and a 33 and Kay Dummermuth who boated two fish of just over 30 pounds each. Carl Wilmarth and Holly Gucker rounded out the scoring at The Clubhouse with fish of 31 and 30 pounds, respectively.

Eddy Gramlich was the top angler of late at The Outpost with a 33 followed by Bob Murrell and Gerry Anderson, both with even 30’s. Generally speaking, all three lodges are reporting more fish in the mid to high twenties this past week, a trend we hope to see continuing as it often does in the later weeks of summer. And if it does, there will be something waiting for those magnificent migrating Salmon down Port Louis way in just a few more sleeps – me! I love late-summer fishing when even the wild west side of Graham Island can be calm as pond-water, the air warm and the ocean still thick with Pacific Salmon.Until then, you know the rules friends: Stay safe and well and always keep a tight line!
