The Clubhouse Report September 8th ~ "Ridiculous Coho fishing here at Langara!"

September 8, 2014

Ridiculous Coho fishing here at Langara this week. Never have I fished on a patch of fish like we angled on this last few days up the East Side. Below is a few pics of just a couple of the monsters hammering our cut plugs, caught with the Marcus Chaulk group from Scotia Capital.First pic is of Matt Connelly posing with his derby tying 19 lb Northern, what a chunky monster.

* Coho fishing September style at Langara. As you can see I am very obsessed with big Coho, next to yellow dotters, one of my highlights for sure in a season. Down south a big Coho is classified as a ten plus, unless you are fishing Renfrew. Even then, not many hovering around 20 lbs are taken. These are giants. Any Coho in the teens is big, over 15lbs you have a story. When you see three during the week at 19 to 20 lbs, wow. These fish are thick out there as of today.

* Secret northern Coho hotspot - look at the weather! The Coho were following the dummy flashers affixed to the cable right on the surface. We easily strip casted for them with a cut plug and zero weight. Matt grabbed his in the prop wash. Ours were taken often as I clipped my mainline into the release clip. We are talking screaming surface runs and 10 to 15 min fights, gees, I still cant believe the day today! We have had an awesome Sept fishery and it is ongoing. Sure some of the neighbors are now closed as North Island is heading south, nicely wrapped up for the season. Naden Harbour had a great season, but now enjoying shutdown. Here at Langara we have another trip to go and I am excited about it as the fish, weather and everything is about perfect right now. It is a long winter coming up in Canada, the longer I am here fishing and catching like this there is no better place to be.Below is a few pics of our last trip Sept 1 to 4. I was guiding big Loren and his wife Sheryl from Alaska. We had great time fishing for Chinook in the twenties, Halibut into the 30 lb class and and yet another 18 lb Coho! That 18 lber was a crazy fight, still shaking at the sight of that monster coming over the rail. Again great weather and fish in decent numbers, including a very large thresher shark that hammered our rigger rod, 60 feet, off the fallen tree. That tail slapping the side of my boat was one interesting interaction. My second thresher off the fallen tree, lucky me, aren't I SOMETHING!

* Loren from Alaska knows a big northern when he gets it, 18lbs.

* 27lb September Chinook for Sheryl.

* 27lb September Chinook for Sheryl. So our last group showing for this season, personally think the season went fast. Obviously I enjoy it out on the local tack like no one else, this is the spot to angle on the west coast. A long season, and a continuous supply of fish is how I make my living 5 months of the year, and Langara has everything I need May to September. Standby for another report as I look forward to a great week ahead.Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
