The Clubhouse Report July 3 ~ "14 tyees on the trip and Humpies putting on a show!"

July 3, 2014

Hello again from the Clubhouse, here at Langara. Just up the hill after taking a vicious beating from a lingering squall, the rains were topical in force. A very dark cloud swooped in stretching from the Jalun to Andrews , and wow, did it pour! The rain was heavy to very heavy, an absolute soaker. Our rain room will be working overtime.Fishing was very spotty today. Some might call it dead. Others might call it a challenge. For sure a sleeper fish wise. The Humpbacks are in at Cohoe Point and a show is underway for sure. Bubble feeding as they do is quite a sight, and the herring balls are everywhere. That said the guides at Coho sat on balls all day, and although they enjoyed the show, fishing was poor. The fish that were hooked were promptly chomped on by rock dogs. To make matters worst, the Orcas arrived in numbers, and yes, no Salmon was safe. Very enjoyable to see the nature show, waters relatively calm, but tough Salmon fishing. Our last trip was a success and wrapped up yesterday. here is a pic of Peter Rogovin and a fine looking spring Salmon caught in tight off Cohoe. This fish was about what we are catching on the decent size range, with fish of the tripo weighing in at 35 lbs, Clint Weir the lucky angler. This fish was coached by Tyler, and grabbed out off the Gunia trench I was told. Of the 14 tyee on the trip most were at 30 or 31 lbs. So the big monsters are still to come. I hope. Last year they showed starting July 7th so we will see.

With all the herring around we should soon see a fresh run in here. There are schools of Juvenile herring in the tons, one school off little Coho I would say is maybe 5 tons. There is a 25 ton school off the pin, medium to larges, and they are jig able biters, my new favourite pastime. I see some guests trying to net them, hello? Use a jig, when will people realize herring will slip through the web?Gee the sun just came out as i sit here, well done. Now this changes everything. I am including a pic of Darcy Doyle and his trophy Halibut grabbed off little Cohoe. I hope for his sake his family is small! Chicken halibut , yum yum!
