The Clubhouse Report July 25 ~ "Second largest trip of the season here at Langara. 12 tyees, about time!"

July 26, 2014

A pretty hot week here at The Clubhouse, the tyees have finally shown up, and we have just recorded our second largest trip of the season here at Langara. 12 tyees, about time!We finally had some decent fishing in our usual hotspots on the east side of Langara. Below is a pic of Laurie Mullin and a nice tyee she angled with me on Wednesday. We had been having a tough morning, with the sea lions snatching our Springs whenever we hooked up. We were over at Cohoe Point, and one after another those lions were on their game, grabbing Jacks, Coho, and pretty much everything with fins attached to a hook. At one point Conman, Gallagher and myself were all zooming toward shore trying to recover our gear while fighting off seat punches and blown stacks!Enough was enough, so moved my crew to Boulder, where we instantly hooked a good fish, and dammit, a lion there too, would I completely snap? Hard not to move on again, but stuck with it, and 45 minutes later Laurie had a bump, reeled down on the rigger rod, waited for another bump, then popped the fish off the release clip, and bingo a tyee. Would we land this fish? Sea lion patrolling, so we tightened the drag down, and in short order, maybe three runs, the fish was bagged. Wow, now that was a nice fish! What a way to head in for lunch. John was pretty proud, witnessing Laurie bag that fish, her first tyee! Hopefully she has the bug now and we will be fishing again next year.

Nevin Chernick was fishing with Bud, and angled a very nice 38 lb fish at Coho Point. Bud is talking again, or maybe he just dislikes me. Jack Charles released a 37, largest release of the trip, now that is the spirt! Well done Jack. The Kal Tire group had six tyee, 30 to 36 lbs, Ina Long had a 35 lb fish, Mary Ellen had a 34, and Mini Grange guided a couple slabs for the Hawksworth group. Pretty great trip in here, the cooking demos were well attended and I heard the rabbit demo was a show stopper! So the fishing continues good, today saw a 42 in here from Gunia, and totes of Jacks from Cohoe, caught deep off the cable. Coho fishing is above average, with tens and elevens being average now! Graham island shoreline is the hawg hotspot, but its still a grind, while deep off Cohoe and Andrews is where the heavy fishing is happening. Try 90 to 125 feet on your rigger! In other news, Bud had his wheelhouse window blown out this pm, details to follow, duct tape for Bud tomorrow. May I suggest plywood and plastic? Rain tomorrow! What happened Bud?Okay bedtime, more soon.Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
