The Clubhouse Report July 21 ~ "17lb Coho release and some nicer Chinook fishing to report here at Langara!"

July 22, 2014

A straight gut shot easterly blowing this pm, thunder showers, and yes, some nicer Chinook fishing to report here at Langara.Sure it was wet, sunny, overcast, dark at times, crazy day here weather wise, but four tyee to report! Top fish went to catch and release angler Jack Charles, fishing with Korey, a 37 lb fish. The team rolled out at the crack of 830, stared at rod tips to 1230, when a rod buckled and the rest was history. Gunia Point coughed up another one.Shaun and one of his partners, JRod, fished Andrews and each boat grabbed a tyee at 34 lbs. Steve had an early morning appointment to learn how to cook Salmon in kelp, so back to the dock at 9am with a 31 lber and a rather large crap eating grin. Culinary week here, cooking classes for the guests. I hear rabbit is on the menu tomorrow, say what? Some great fish around since my last report, not in my boat mind you....a 64 was taken in a self-guided unit next door, as well as a 62 at the bottom of the hill so a few squeaking through. A huge 17 lb Coho was released here by a young guide, pics on his iPhone so not really usable , but what a beak on that southern Coho!A lone whale is pounding Boulder right in the kelp, feasting on needlefish. This is a hotspot for large kings right now. Not saying heaps of fish, but those patiently fishing shallow and staring at rod tips for hours are occasionally rewarded. Mid twenties are now possible as well as the very odd monster. Time is passing by quickly, still wondering where this huge run of big kings is? I hear the trollers might shut down in a week or so fishing on the Chinook, so things could pick up slightly.I had a look out west today, forget about it for now, NO FISH. Your best bet is Andrews, Cohoe, and Boulder. We have grabbed them deep at Andrews, up to 150 feet. On the other side, shallow of course, 30 to 60 feet. Tight on the beach. So yes, four tyee on the day, a nice turnaround, lets see what tomorrow brings. At the bottom I have included some photos from our last group PCL that didn't make it into my last report. Enjoy and check back soon.Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
