The Clubhouse Report July 12 ~ "Zero wind, calm seas and bright sunshine!"

A sunny night in here tonight, zero wind and two happy guests in the attached photo. Randy and son Jason were fishing with me at Boulder Bay, one quick pass on the way in for dinner, and finally, a tyee to report on my boat, a 33 lb specimen. Randy grabbed this fish off the rigger at 33 feet, and what a perfect fight, fish handled expertly, and once landed, she was placed in the catch and release tub. This fish had plenty of spunk, and was tough to pin down for a measurement, they do well in the big aquarium. I have included a couple pics of Randy with the fish, as well as the fish on her way being released! This is Randys first tyee, son Jason grabbing a 44 lb monster last season. They are up here fishing with Paul Douglas and the semi annual Father Son trip.

Day one of the trip was very slow, so we blew out to the outer banks, being relatively calm and dropped the hook for some Halibut. Yes once in a blue moon I do go out there, the regulars being Conman, Korey, Tennant, Bud, Shawn, ya there is a small Halibut charter group here. Below is a pic of the Marquardt dual again with two almost max sized specimens, the larger being 68 lbs, coming in at 128 cms, that is one thick flatfish.

Fishing in general has been spotty, some of this is the trolling pressure me thinks. The Alaskan fishery has just gone off as has our own troll fishery. Definitely the pressure has been noticeable, and we are not on any large schools of spring Salmon. At present the average spring Salmon is in the mid teens, with the bigger fish being in the twenties. We have one fish in the thirties this trip with a day to go. Last trip Korey and Shawn guided the two largest fish, each released and measuring 43 lbs! Korey found his fish down at the Jalun, while Shawn grabbed his off Andrews in the deep! There were three tyee on the trip. I found a couple 28 lbers I was pretty proud of at Cohoe Point, for Jim Henderson and John Pankin, veterans of the north coast fishery. We found these fish trolling 60 feet off the cable at the pin. Felt lucky to bring them aboard as well, with lions milling around the boat, I actually now admit I hate Lions!So yes we are grinding at this point , my tote today had a limit of mid to high teen Chinook, we had a Coho, three Lings to 20 lbs, and two Halibut at 78 cms, and the tyee release. We also had zero wind and calm seas, and bright sunshine. So looking back, not half bad. Realistically the Chinooks seem to be a bit on the smaller size, and slower fishing as well for them. On the other side of the fence, the Halibut club members and our Halibut king and Captain of the club Matt Conman are doing very well, heavy hauling, and packing plenty ice and bait. Throw in a bucket of cannonballs, a case of 10/0 circle hooks, a tub of Salmon frames, a couple hundred yards of tuff line, a dozen ugly sticks, a couple pair of rubber gloves and off you go. Matt might surprise you with a pot roast while you are out there, he wraps a small rump in tinfoil, places it under the cowling of his 350 Yamaha on the ride out, and once the anchor is dropped, you are in heaven with the aroma. Throw in a couple bacon strips from your egg muffin bagel in the morning and you have a feast out there in the middle of nowhere, good times!Off to bed, hope things are hopping in the am, we have weather on our side, hope you all get a chance to visit this area this year.Goodnight from Langara.Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
