The Clubhouse Report August 30th ~ "The spring action is hot and the totes are full!"

August 30, 2014

Hello again from Langara Island, where the spring action is still hot, and the totes are full! Every tote was plugged this am, 130 Salmon hit the dock! Buckets of springs and a decent amount of Coho from the am fish, as well as plenty of Halibut from the east side fishery, some hitting the 120 cm mark, or 47 lbs.The last week has been busy, no slowdown in the fishery up here at Langara. Dixon Entrance is very busy right now, with a run of mid to high teen Chinook, some hitting the tyee size, with plenty 20 lbers over the last seven days. This is a crazy place to fish spring Salmon, no better fishery with consistent action like this over five months. The springs just keep coming, and I for one will be out there until they stop, which might be mid September and beyond. I just cant put the Islanders away with all these springs pouring past Cohoe Point.Below is a few pics of the last Boeing trip late August. Marty Bentrott and his Boeing group, including some first timers from Russia. We hit plenty fish in the low to mid twenties, weather was awesome, and everyone caught plenty of fish.

* Another happy Boeing employee! Fishing was hot as we headed into the Derby, Fishing For Kids, and we were optimistic the tourney this year would be much different than the previous year. The Sunday was a free day to warm up the guests and sort out the hands, as some of the guests were current NHL players. I was thinking they might be squeezing the sawdust out the sticks, so off we went to Cohoe Point. I was guiding Laurence Gillman and Jim Benning, new GM of the Canucks, along with Randy Daggit and his partner. We hammered the tar out of them, and a few pics below show some of the results. Laurence was on fire, and between my many questions concerning the NHL, and hockey past and present, landed this beauty 25 lb Chinook.

* Canucks team enjoying a great day! The tourney was a huge success of course, with many laughs, and plenty of stories. Dan Hamhuis brought along his gold medal, a thrill for the many hockey fans guest wise and staff wise. Dan fished with new Canuck Ryan Stanton, and both caught great fish at 29 lbs and 27 lbs, both fish from the West Bank. Dan loves the West Bank!Willie Mitchell, has had a great couple seasons down in L.A. with two Stanley cups, that blows me away. Well done Mitchell, you survived L.A., no Salmon fishing, and the Steelhead many miles from your dressing room. Traded Steel for Stanley, now most of us would do that. Before he heads to Florida and a new start, Mitchell fishing with Bruce Langereis and guide Jordie got hot at the right time. Jordie snuck up to Mac. and grabbed a 32 lb Chinook for number 33, while Bruce showed us all, the holy roller is alive and well, grabbing 200,000 bucks and a 42 lb Chinook! The boys fished deep off the cable, Jordie said they laid cable 120 feet I believe. Mitchell told me Jordie almost got sick when that fish surfaced, and at the net he threw a borderline hip check on the downrigger, almost knocking it off the gunnel. One thing I know about Stromquist, his extra long arms come in handy. He is a fearless netter, and will stab at a fish from ten feet away. No problem. Scares the bejesus out of me, but his record stands for itself. I noticed Jordie had a smoke after that one dockside, he was pretty happy with himself. Bruce sent a whack of pops down to the dock and all the guides had a great time socializing with the champs. What is the flashlight thing you bought boys? Need one. I should add all the money raised and won is donated back, that a boy Bruce, first star tonight! So off the guys went Wed. So much money raised, so much fun. The guides had a great time, but stressful always. Especially when you are sitting on a contending fish. Every call for a weigh boat your blood pressure spikes. Shawn Crawford had no issue in the Coho pool though, ending the derby before it started, with a 20 lb monster! This fish is being mounted, rightfully so, could have raised about 40, 000 bucks for the cause. That is crazy big Northern. Heading south? The Boeing guests are here again on two day trips, and holy cow, 130 Salmon weighed in today. Well done dock crew, as all these fish were vac packed, never mind the Halibut. Most of the fish were mid teens, but new Halibut guru Peter hit two 100 lb Halibut in Dibrell Bay, and is telling us about it haha. Exciting stuff for sure. The Chinook today were deep and shallow, the riggers though prevailed and make life easy for sure. Quick fishing pulling that break, dropping the lead to 110 feet and whack, your on. Time and time again, fish after fish.On that note off to the sack I go, more stories soon, better save a few as we still have a few weeks to go. We are not closed, why would we? This fishing is fantastic, the crowds have thinned, why not take advantage? Can not wait to GET OUT THERE, and like Jordie, lay some cable!Goodnight from The ClubhouseMike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
