The Clubhouse – July 13 – Not many words can accurately describe the fishing here at Langara today.

July 14, 2011

Not many words can accurately describe the fishing in here at Langara today. One of the most prolific Spring bites I have ever witnessed took place for ten hours on the west side. Twenty two packs of bait later and a running total of seventy springs confirmed on our lines and released left my guests speechless, myself exhausted, my hands brutalized, and my mind completely blown away.

We were fishing in two meter seas with a roll and a chop. Tricky water with a strong flood tide and a good swell, kept most boats out of there, with five of our big whalers hammering the tar out of the chinook, most guests done by noon. not us, my guests wanted lunch on the water. We sat on this pocket of fish for ten hours straight. An amazing tonnage of bait was in there too, with the humpback whale feeding frantically, the sea lion almost too full to steal our fish. We lost three springs to the lion, not bad in ten hours.

Our fish averaged seventeen lbs, with many low twenties, up to twenty five, Wicked fishing, one rod in at a time, fifty feet or so on the cable and bingo, fish on. The bait just kept pouring in, and so did the fish, I am sure a few thousand springs were migrating by the rock and feeding frantically. Korey went to plugs and yes they were working, he was fished out by noon. Pass after pass fish on, no tea time today, with bilge pumps working overtime, breakers popping as these things get hot, running hours at a time. By two pm I was mouth breathing, almost in a trance, sending cut plugs to all depths experimenting as I went, did not matter. Walls of springs were transiting the area, something I have rarely seen in my years here at Langara.

Yes only a few times one gets to witness a fishery like this, at one point only two boats were working this pocket of fish. Very encouraging to see the hawg herring as well, some jigged by myself, even they were biting. In a way it was awesome it was so rough, for selfish reasons. Kept the fleet out, only the big whalers had a chance at these fish. I saw Bud tapping his head, many springs into his late starting day, he had the disturbing grin of glee on his face. I saw Bruce Langereis and his group on scene, looking haggard after playing so many fish. Marty Dohm and Tony Hii were with me and I had to drag them home or I would have missed dinner! Marty himself played over forty fish.

I am off to bed, in shock at what I saw today... Dixon Entrance West, Langara was plugged with spring salmon today, goodnight from the Clubhouse.
