A sunny beautiful evening here at Langara, where the fish cooperated today and big grins are present everywhere. Yes a nice run of twenty to twenty eight pound Chinook are now here in some locations, and the ever present fourteen to nineteen pounders are just about everywhere.
* The Throne Group with big grins and a great catch! I’ve included a couple pics of the Throne group I fished today along with guide Owen. We fished around the island in the am, releasing countless smaller to medium sized red springs, I noticed many were clipped, indicating hatchery raised fish. A brief lunch on the water and we headed out west looking for a little more size, soon angling low to mid twenties, topping out at twenty eight pounds for our group. John Throne in the picture below shows off a twenty six pounder, and he also took a twenty five, so we were happy with that. Fred Buttrell and his son Andy were with Owen for the day and they loaded up as well with mid twenties , see picture below of the happy campers showing off nice sized springs on a sunny evening. We are now also grabbing the odd Coho as well, these are seven to nine pounds and we are averaging two to three a boat. Still a bit early for the Coho, but a good sign for sure. All locations are producing, with the whole east side loaded with teenagers and plenty of bait. Fish are also holding at Boulder, although a bit more sporadic and the fish seem smaller at the moment.Depth wise, the Chinook are shallower than deep at the moment, with mooching rods actively fished out the stern behind the cable. Fishing four rods in the shallows is work when the bite is on and the kelp is running but it can be very productive. We will keep you updated as the week moves along, but there does seem to be a bump in size this week, so that is nice to see. Top fish of the trip is a 31 thus far, for the Roberts group, and the Stanberrys snuck a thirty in last night. Tyee are not plentiful at this point, but July could be a different story. We did have a forty one pound fish on our last trip released, angled out west on boat ten, hopefully I can track down a pic of that fish. This is the camps top fish to date this season. For now, goodnight, morning comes early, time for rest and check back soon.Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
