CH Report: Hello from Langara Island! - May 29, 2018

May 30, 2018

Hello again from Langara Island, Haida Gwaii! It is opening day here at The Clubhouse and our first day of fishing wrapped up at 7:00 pm. Everyone is now seated, and dining has begun. Time for a quick report on the fishing today. We were off to the races at about noon, heading out in all directions. The weather is wet for sure, but the sea is calm. The high slack took place at 1:30 pm so I started off at Boulder with a small fleet. Nothing was going on in a half dozen passes so we ran up the east side, joining Owen, Bud, Brent, Jona, among a dozen boats from The Club. Fishing was very spotty to be honest, and I was somewhat frantic anticipating a first opportunity. Finally, I drove the boat over one off Andrews, and Paul Craviotto successfully landed the first chinook on Boat 4, a 14 lber. We quickly set back up and hit another right away, 55 feet off the cable. I looked over my port side and Nathan's guest had a small chinook running around the boat, so signs of life. Owen was fishing with Robert McDonald and they grabbed one at the same time. Owen pictured below looks pretty happy with his first catch of the season, off and running.

Clubhouse guide, Owen Drysdale showing off his catch. I anticipate we will be in for more action tomorrow, the first day of our fun Short Notice Club Derby: top prize a trip for two back this season for a stay, a very nice prize. The guides are all feeling out the area and each trip out we are going to learn more, where they are and equally important where they are not!As this is a salmon derby, I have not heard anyone looking for halibut. That said, our designated fish master Brady Stephenson grabbed a 130 cm halibut on a shallow back mooching rod at Cohoe Point. Of course, that was released as the new size limit is in effect coast-wide, set at 115 cm.I hear its my turn to grab some firewood and get the flames blasting in the lounge, so until next blog, goodnight from Langara.-Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
