CH Report: Great Fishing Continues - August 20, 2018

August 20, 2018

Hello from the Clubhouse, here at Langara. It's a Friday night here and time to send in some pictures and a report for the last week's fishing.Overall it has been good. There are a few tyee in the mix, lots of low to mid twenties on the board, and for those that like coho, yes they are here. The trip Aug 9 to 12 saw some great chinook action. Some of us concentrated on the Boulder Gunia area and did quite well. No huge fish but plenty nice fish in the twenties. Below are a few pictures of the Macquarie group and some of the success they had.

Nice fish off Boulder for the Macquarie group.

Beautiful weather and fish off Boulder Bay.We were fishing tight in Boulder, a bunch of feed was residing in there, along with this humpback whale scraping the beach happily devouring the tiny juvenile herring.

Humpback whale feeding along the beach.Lucy came out for a fish, and wanted me to post this picture of her first chinook, a twenty lb'er.

Lucy inspecting her twenty lb'er.Johnathan Rubenstein joined me for a quick fish and grabbed this nice low twenties chinook off the kelp deep in the bay.

Jonathan Rubenstein with a low twenties caught off Boulder. Below is a picture of the sounder, note the setup. Heaps of feed on the screen and very shallow. We put out 9 pulls on the mooching rods and 21 feet on the rigger at high tide. You only have 31 feet of water to work with in there.

The sounder setup.Aug 12 to 16 saw a few bigger fish move in, I believe three tyee on the board. Below is a picture of Brian Nixon and John Throne with a couple nice fish, 28 lbs and 31 lbs. These were grabbed off Coho Point with guide Owen, photo credit Owen for this pic.

John Throne and Brian Nixon with a 28 and 31, guided by Owen Drysdale.I fished Mark Turner, first timer here along with Mike Throne. We had some ok fishing, below is a picture of Mark's first 20 lb chinook, his largest fish he has ever caught, and he was very excited!

Mark excited about his first ever chinook. Mark soon learned to hold fish out for a photo, and held this bright 22 lb chinook out for a photo op.

Mark Turner holding his 22 lb'er proudly off Coho Point. The bite seemed to be right off the hop and right on the kelp. Fishing shallow, Mike grabbed this high twenties to start our day off in the right direction.

Mark Turner and Mike Throne with high twenties off Boulder Bay.Fishing is continuing to be good and pointing in the right direction. There are coho miles offshore and out from Pillar on what we call the troller tack. Remember commercial boats have the right of way when engaged in fishing operations. Always! The boys heading out are fishing in 300 feet of water.Myself? I am hugging shores dreaming of the big one any minute. Today was a good day in at Coho point, we rattled off a 29 and a 27. Korey's boat had two large chinook so those that work the shorelines are still grabbing nice August fish. I will have pictures of the current fishery on the next blog. I am seeing lots of fish in the cutting room so all is very good here at Langara.Goodnight from the Clubhouse. Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
