CH Report: Easy Fishing For Numbers Right Now! ~ August 11, 2015

August 12, 2015

Hello from The Clubhouse here at Langara on a Monday evening. Incredible weather and excellent fishing continues, with Tyees showing up daily and sizable ones at that.I just ambled up from the dock on a spectacular evening, no hurry to hit the cook shack tonight. Lots of boat work to catch up on, fresh leaders to be tied, scrubbing, icing up the the fish hold. Nice to keep these retained fish on ice, it is hot out there. I did get a chance to check in with some of the guides, top fish of the day was taken on Korey's skiff, boat 6. This fish hit the 39 lb mark. There are oodles of springs and decent Coho up the east side. Fish deep, fish shallow, fish anywhere and you will hit fish. Easy fishing for numbers right now. Big buckets of 8 to 12 lb Coho, Springs 18 to 27, and flat calm waters and warm temperatures. no wind!I have been concentrating on the top of Graham Island, and had plenty success in the process. I am including a picture of Tyee number 3 of his trip angled by Jeff Kuhn, a nice 31,5 lb release out at Cohoe Point, yes the sea lions temporarily cleared out and let us fish! Jeff ended up with three released Tyee, a 41.3, a 40 lb, and the 31.5. We take the length, multiply the girth squared, and divide by 800, not 750 as some do. We insist the number to be 800, and over many years of measuring and releasing, find this to be the accurate honest measurement. We do measure lots of retained fish daily, surprising how this weight calculation works out. Also a beautiful thing watching the Tyees swim away free, happy to add my guests have released all Tyees since mid July! Thank you for that, and I always insure a quality picture is taken on a real camera haha, no iphone pics!

This was a one hit for the morning fishery, but John stepped up and did not blow it! What a smoker off the rigger, heavy and fast, we chased this fish out offshore, having hooked it tight into Gunia. We put heaps of pressure on her, as lions were ever present, this time we won and into the hippaqurium she went. A few pics of John reviving his prize below. This fish was hard to pick up, fully revived and squirming for her freedom. I had to help get ahold of this beauty and pose with it haha. Very cool to see this one go back, we had open spots, but no way John wanted to take this prize. Thank you John, for releasing her, well done.

The Coho are bigger, the Chinook are larger, maybe not the numbers you grab in June, which is almost overwhelming at times. We are lucky as well, no Pinks, where are they this year? What a break. Tyee fishing at it's finest, weather sitting in behind Doug mooching in the bait, trolling shallow on the kelp of Gunia, tacking down to Boulder, fending off Todd at Gunia who was guiding his guests from NIL last trip in lucky boat 8, all good. Todd knows that spot well, and I witnessed him scoop a mid thirties a couple days ago hooked in the classic spot.Yes it is fun here, we are busy, the weather spectacular, Tyees biting as are the bread and butter mis twenties, whales and more whales! Wildlife viewing is on right now, you will see humpbacks everywhere. Why not come up or look to get here when you can. All the guides look forward to seeing those showing during the remainder of this season. This is a bounce back season of Chinook fishing on the north coast....can't wait to share it with you.Good night from LangaraMike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
