CH Report: Chinook Building in the Size Department! - June 18, 2019

June 18, 2019

Blustery Southwest wind in here today, some heavy rain showers, made it an interesting day out on the water. The fish board looks promising for day two of our fourth trip of the season. Lots of mid high teens and a 45 lb June monster released out on the west side in Brent's boat, lucky boat 7.Fishing for Chinook is continuing to build in the size department. Lots of fish have been angled by our guided fleet in the low to mid twenties with a few just breaking the tyee mark, with almost every tyee released. Owen had a nice trip last week picking up two of the tyee, one at Cohoe point, the second off the west side. Nathan also grabbed a 32 lber out west, as a few nicer sized Chinook rolled through.I don't have pictures of these fish but our Photo Pro Jessica is currently up here for three trips, so pictures will show up eventually of some of the lucky anglers releasing some great fish. In the meantime, here's a shot of some of the wildlife spotted this season.

Humpback whales bubble feeding off Langara Island. The Erikson trip had a great week in here, plenty laughs, and some decent fishing for size and numbers. Below is a pic of Sean with his 30 lb release, which turned out to be our group's best effort.Jordie fished the group hard of Channel Reef and he had some very nice fish in the mid to high twenties, while Bud worked the east side hard with plenty results to show for his efforts.Last trip Owen, Shawn, Paul and myself were looking after the Air Canada Jazz group, and Owen proved to be the top boat finding two tyee just making the mark. I had no luck with size, but found fishing pretty good for low to mid twenties, below are a couple pics I took out on the grounds. We did have some decent weather as well, and overall the week concluded with great results.

Sean from the Erikson group releasing his tyee on a very wet day!

Air Canada Jazz with a very nice mid twenties out off Cohoe Point.

Air Canada Jazz anglers with another mid twenties to take home! Brent's been on the early season roll out West, out East, South, North and pretty much tied to the dock. It's a funny sport this fishing. When confidence strikes and you're on fire out on the grounds, nothing better. Pretty sure he could grab a 28 lber under the dock at the moment. Not sure what he is doing different but following him on the magic tack this week has been interesting to say the least. Pretty sure he is getting three opportunities to my one at the moment, so ya, I gotta get going.Below is a picture of Brent on his magic tack, tight in the rocks scraping for monsters.

Brent On the magic tack out west, tight to the rocks searching! Here is another pic of Jona in one of the most scenic areas Haida Gwaii has to offer. Rain or shine what a spectacular area to drop a line and search for Chinook.

Jona out on the search on the spectacular west side! For the self guides, the east side has been productive, set a rigger at 80 feet offshore Andrews and you're going to catch Chinook all day long. Set a rigger at 40 feet and you will grab the odd Coho as well! Shawn Crawford just grabbed a 28 tonight on a weighted rod shallow off Dibrell Bay, offshore, so there are Chinook to be caught in plenty different areas. That said, it has been dead at Lacy, Boulder very slow, Gunia quiet today for sure.Weather permitting the offshore halibut has been excellent. The trick is to get it done on a calm day, those swells are huge on a southerly blow.Okay, I'm over and out, find us on Channel 9 out on the grounds, look forward as do all our guides in seeing you soon!Good night from Langara,Mike Tonnesen, head guide, Screamer
