CH Report: “Coho, A Few Chinook & Lucy” – July 26, 2018

July 26, 2018 | 395 Views

Hi again, checking in on a foggy night here at Langara. Some chinook have moved back into the area and the weather has settled down wind wise, so things are looking good for the week ahead.

The last ten days have been a little slower than usual on the chinook front. The top fish on the David Hawksworth and friends trip was in the low thirties. I know Jona and his guest, Bob Benbow grabbed a 32 lb fish out west and released it, that fish pictured below.

Our next trip was a tougher one as north west winds screamed for all three days, leaving most of us fishing coho point in the protected area tight to shore. I was guiding Mark Zivot and Carlo Galasso and we found a few springs, nothing crazy. Below is a pic of Carlo with his best effort, a 20 lb chinook.

Lucy did most of the rod watching, pictured below.

Carlo, Mark and Lucy did a lot of watching and comforting each other in the wind, another cute picture below.

Juergen Schurtz and his son Alexander are next up and fishing with me on the current trip. Our first day was a coho show, plenty of those day one in the 9 lb range, but not much for chinook.

By mid-day Monday I was stressing out, where are the chinook? I looked out west, out on the outer banks, running all over the place like my head was cut off. One boat would find three, the next boat notta. I could not even eat lunch. no fish will do that.

By Tuesday my luck was turning and Jauergen broke the ice with this low twenties chinook pictured below.

Here is a picture of Evan about to secure a chinook in the bag.

The afternoon saw us run to the Graham Shoreline and 17 year old Alex grabbed this beauty 26 lb chinook, well done.

Here is another picture of a proud dad with his son, and a great fish that made our day.

A proud dad with his son, well done guys!

Today was a much bigger day in here. I do not have all the details but I know two tyee were taken, one in Andrew’s boat at 31 lbs, and a 31 in Austin’s skiff. So that is encouraging.

Below is a picture of my team, with a couple of chinook we hit this pm. we grabbed our 4 chinook today and our coho, so we were in a good place.

A foggy ending to the trip, but lots of chinook action Gunia way!

The fish are in most locations now. we all have our favourite spot to hunker down. The Bowel has some nice fish as does Gunia. One tyee came from Coho point. one thing I see is a lot of the better fish are being caught shallow, 25 to 50 feet, most on herring. The coho are here and there, incidental caught for the most part, averaging 8 to 11 lbs. The chinook are averaging high teens, lots of low twenties have come in the last couple days.

I have to run off now, chores and dogs to put to bed. Thanks for checking in, and a new report will follow soon, Goodnight from Langara.
