CH Report: Decent weather and fishing has been good! ~ July 8, 2015

July 8, 2015

A steady stiff northwesterly is blowing in here tonight, as it has been for three days. Howling all day and night wears us down, but the fishing is decent and the odd Tyee is kicking around.Over the past week we have seen decent weather and fishing has been good. Lots of the fish in here are teeners right now, with the odd wave of mid twenties passing through. July 1 to 4 saw such a wave, and below is a pic I took of Mike Throne with a thirty lb Tyee he grabbed on the West Bank. We did have to sit for five hours putting in the time with very few bites, but just before noon we were rewarded. We did have a decent trip retaining eight fish over twenty lbs for Mike and his son John.

I fished with Gary Greves and Richard Fankhanel yesterday, deep in Boulder, and we did manage to land a 28 lb Chinook for Richard. There are sea lions on patrol in there, and just about everywhere, so when you have a chance to bag your fish DO SO! It is a lottery game up at Cohoe Point as well, and you win if someone else hooks up first and draws the attention. Korey fished with Seppi Kaltenegger in the same spot and grabbed a 29, outfoxing the lions once again. His technique was the good old free spooling! Below is a pic of Richard with our 28 lb fish and Korey power lifting his 29 and our 28 down at the dock.

Below is a pic of the seas we were in, some great shots of Korey with his guests , and no we were not punishing them we could have been in calmer waters, but decided to head out west and changes things up. Our boat had good fishing with Gary cranking in a 28 lb Chinook, not easy in the 12 foot slop and disorganized seas. Below is a pic of Gary with his large chinook.

* Gary Greves and Darrel Rempfer with a 28 lb Chinook well earned in rougher seas.

Evidently they battled a rock dog which at one point was swimming off with it. Well done guys. Jared in boat 5 snuck a 29 out of Gunia with the Fields group, he was doing cartwheels over that fish.So yes, sea lions are doing their thing here, but we are getting our fish with the odd larger Chinook in the mix. The Coho can be found as well averaging 7 to 8 pounds. A bit early for the main run of Coho. Third week of July is the time for the flood of Coho in Dixon Entrance. All in all a good week in here and everyone is leaving with plenty of fish. It will be nice when the wind drops off, and some large Tyees pass by. So that is it for tonight, goodnight from Langara.Mike Tonnesen, Head Guide, Screamer
