Panama: Life in the Slow Lane

October 8, 2011

New guests Bob and Tyler Craig began their Panamanian adventure with a bang by spending some time in the amazing capital city.

Below is a photo from Ancon Hill – most people who arrive for the first time in Panama City are astounded by how modern the skyline is…

…how wild it is to see the canal up close and personal…

Below is the Amador Causeway, where all the top yacht clubs are in the city. The long skinny road on the left of the photo is the Causeway itself – lined with palm trees and the beautiful people out rollerblading and eating ice cream, it is a great way to experience a slice of “chilling” Panamanian style.

On arrival in Paradise, we waste no time and get the Craigs on the water STAT…here are some shots of their adventures in just a few hours…

NEEDLEFISH (delicious and prehistoric)

JACK…

CUBERA SNAPPER…

DOUBLE HEADER ROOSTER AND AMBERJACK…

Funny story: When Captain Alexi instructed Bob to release the rooster, Tyler thought he meant the amberjack too (which is Alexi’s FAVORITE fish to eat)…

Tyler let it go, and the in the blink of an eye, Captain Alexi shot down from the tower and into the water, where he caught the amberjack WITH HIS HANDS!! and triumphantly brought it back to the boat. Hilarious. And very impressive!!

The Craigs kindly brought home some dinner…

Chef Michael is honing his fly-tying techniques and tried out a fly on some bonito. He is refining his technique for that big sailfish next week!!

Last night we were joined by regular restaurant guests Trish and Tom of the Prowess, accompanied by friend Brian. We love that we have such amazing regulars after just a few short months!

This is the Prowess:

In other news, I would like to share this picture of Lilliana, the lovely Kuna artist who has made us custom marlin Molas based around our logo. AMAZING!!

Molas are the traditional embroidery of the Kuna, one of Panama’s largest indigenous groups. The quality and fineness of the stitching of each individual hand cut piece of fabric is very important – the ability to make an outstanding mola is a source of status among Kuna women.

And most importantly, cigars from Joyas de Panama (which translates as Jewels of Panama), represented by our own Julie Colosso (who womans our operation in Panama City). Our cigar-loving guests have been going nuts for these delicious, smooth-smoking cigars. You can enjoy a cigar on the roof deck under the stars, or take a box home with you to enjoy with your friends when you tell them all the stories of how much fun you had fishing in Panama and driving them into a frenzy of jealousy. Some other goodies that have recently joined us in our little store here – mindbendingly delicious coffee from family-owned Kotowa (it’s what we use on the ship – the best I have tasted in Panama, and maybe anywhere)…New jewellery from Reprosa, a local company who specializes in beautiful reproductions of pre-Columbian artefacts as well as Spanish galleons recovered from the ocean floor right around our island (left there by pirates no doubt!).

People are always fascinated by how we get things out to the ship and the island. Here is a hint of what happens here:

Diesel delivery…we have anywhere from 4,000 – 12,000 gallons at a time delivered to us out here. Our tank can hold a whopping 90,000 gallons total!

Kegs being loaded onto the barge to ship out…under the tarps we have soft drinks, canned beer, and cement. The essentials of life in Paradise!

The logistics are challenging, but always entertaining!!

Here are some funny Panama City moments provided by Julie…

The message on this truck translates as “Mama – it’s so tender I don’t even need teeth!” as the baby gnaws on a big steak. Weird? I think so.

Good night from Paradise,

Tobey.
