Panama Highlights

April 8, 2011

Panama highlights begin with remembering that although we’ve been working in the city (hiring, sourcing and organizing) the reason we’re here is because we’re in the sport fishing capital of the Americas! One visit to the marina helps reminded me of that…

We’ve been very busy the last few days sorting through applicants and interviews for the initial WCFC “Team Panama”. We’re hoping to bring our northern tradition of excellence and service to the Las Perlas Islands. Our first hire was Erik, who is going to work alongside Michael in the Kitchen…

Michael and Tobey have also been doing some research and development to choose the best Panamanian beer for our house beer on the Pacific Provider. Tobey says:
“R&D can be hard, but we have the best interests of our guests in mind! Our front runner favorite is BALBOA, and luckily they can provide us with kegs too.”…

What a job! was this also R & D Tobey…?

…an Ice cream sundae with churros at Manolo’s. Can we make those on the back of the boat after a long day of fishing? While on the food theme, Panama offers many different foods but traditional North American pub fare is NOT easy to find. However the “Golden Frog” did offer them up and of course we couldn’t resist…

They were even served with little plastic gloves…

Here’s a trick photo for you, whats big and white in the middle of the Jungle?

A tanker going down the Canal!

We also visited a few of the university campuses which are located in the “Ciudad del Sabar”… or the city of knowledge…

Nigel learned that in the Ciudad Del Saber that they give out parking tickets much faster than in the actual city…

I’ll end with some Panama “fast facts”:

Panama is the only place in the world where you can see the sun rise in the Atlantic and set in the Pacific.

The Panama Canal has three separate locks that each vessel must pass through. Fed by gravity, an average of 55 million gallons of fresh water is used and it takes about eight minutes to fill each lock chamber.

The official unit of currency in Panama is the Panama balboa. However, the official paper currency of Panama is the US dollar. Although they stopped printing the Panama balboa, Panama does still mint balboa coins, but they’re the same size, shape and metal of the equivalent US coins, and can be used interchangeably.

Panama has the largest rainforest in the Western Hemisphere outside the Amazon Basin.

Panama’s most popular sport is baseball.
