Panama: Fun in the SunJuly 3, 2011
I had so much fun today I don’t know where to begin. Despite Brian Legge’s protestations that he doesn’t like to get up before the “crack of 10”, we headed out early with our amazing WCFC Captains Junior and Alexis, and Mate Donar. Yes – I WENT FISHING!! This is the first time I have had a chance to get out fishing since we opened, and it was AMAZING.
Note the newly named “Cape Knox”, named for the most westerly point on Langara Island in Haida Gwaii (imagine the hilariousness of our Panamanian staff pronouncing this!).
We came upon a huge school of tuna, with dozens of porpoises dancing around them. The scene was truly magical – as Brian L said, you just can’t ever get tired of watching it. The tuna are leaping in the air, birds swooping everwhere, a giant sea turtle in a tussle with a tuna, dolphins doing acrobatics, and it’s just you and the big blue and the huge sky overhead. We are truly lucky to be a part of this.
A hit on some live bait quickly became more interesting when we saw it was a shark hitting…look at this clean bite off this bonito! Yikes…
Some more action is quick to begin…Brian L and I are quickly reeling in a double header…somehow I scored the fighting chair and left Brian with the belt.
Sorry to look so gleeful about it Brian! Incredible to feel the pull and fight of a yellowfin – the first one for me was 75 pounds, and about 130 lbs for Brian!
My arms feel like overcooked spaghetti right now. What a great great great day!
Only a few minutes later – the next tuna is hooked (85 pounds!). This is, of course, the moment that every woman likes having her picture taken – sweaty and red faced, grunting in agony from the sensation of arms being pulled from sockets….but what the heck.
Meanwhile our Captain Chris was fishing with Brian G and the crew of the Hooker today, along with our friends from the Billfish Foundation. It’s nice to see Chris off the ship for a very very very will deserved fishing break!
We are looking forward to collaborating with the Billfish Foundation to start recording all our released billfish.
And here is our very own Lindsay Davis COVER GIRL! on the front cover of BC Outdoors. Go out and get your collector’s edition NOW! Lovely Lindsay caught this 25 lb Chinook salmon up at North Island Lodge – right off Fallen Tree (for those Langara connoisseurs).
Goodnight from Paradise,
