Panama Canal Crossing

April 30, 2011

Panama Update: TODAY WE CROSS THE CANAL!

We started this morning in the Caribbean ocean port of Colon…

It was a beautiful day and all was favorable for our crossing to the Pacific and our first “Guests”. So time to set up the upper deck…

The furniture looks great now lets throw on some cushions…

Wow…this is going to be a popular hangout. Lets set the table…

Tobey you look fantastic…Michaels in the kitchen getting lunch ready…

Looking sharp in your kitchen whites Caballo! The ship is ready and now we wait, the girls lean back and soak up a few rays…

The sun will make you pass out here in 20 seconds…be careful. Then our first guests arrive…

Its the owners of WCFC…Brian Legge, Brian Grange with guests Jessie (Brian’s Fiancée), Fanny, Pablo and photographers Carlo and Patrick. With a big hug from Tobey, Brian Legge steps onto the Pacific Provider and a new chapter of the WCFC story has begun…

Shorty thereafter Neal and Chris haul the anchor and were off…

Jessie makes good use of the upper deck and brings in some much need celebrity gossip…the first we’ve had in 2 weeks…

Now that I’m all caught up…we get in line and head west with the rest of the armada for the first lock (thats how they spell it here, I’ll have evidence later)…

“Hey! Out of our way Erimo”! Look out behind us…

Captain Larry takes us to the gate where two canal pilots join him on the bridge and a handfull of linemen (and one lineswoman) jump onto the deck. Then we’re funneled into the lock itself…

Notice the roller coaster style tracks outlining the height “stages” of the lock. We cut power to the engines and the canal crew sends out a rowboat with a couple of fearless rowers with cables in hand…

Thats high tech! One of the linesmen throws a connecting line to the rowers…

They tied the fastest knot I’ve ever seen that connects the cable to the throw line. The deck crew hauls the line and cable on board the Pacific Provider and secures it to the boat…

…whats the other end of this cable? A little tram…

… four little trams to be precise, two for each side, one on the bow and one on the stern. In a combined effort they tighten the cables to keep us in the middle of the lock and move forward pulling us into position. Heres a broader look from the upper deck…

Notice the trams on either side for both our boat and the ship ahead of us. We sit back and enjoy the ride…go tram go…

Just another day at work…

The linesmen take a seat and according to Screamer each brought a small bag of collectables that they’re eager to pawn…I think Mike’s going to buy a hat…

Frank chums it up with a new friend…

We enter into the first lock and the doors close behind us…

Then the water pours in…

Michael and I are amazed at the flow, the lock filled up in a few minutes. Here’s a shot from the Canal web cam as we enter the first set of locks…

How cool is that! Everyones on deck to witness the 7th wonder of the world…

Photographers Patrick (sporting his Vancouver “hipster” beard) and Carlo catch every moment of the action and tomorrow we’ll post the coolest time-lapse of the crossing you’ll EVER see…

When was this built?…

1913, thats when! Smile Lindsay!

Heres a few shots of the ship following behind us…

…wait your turn big fella! Up you go little tram…

Bye Bye big red…

And just like that we’re through the first set of locks and off we go…photo thanks to another canal web cam.

We’re currently in the second lock system, its 10pm and were expecting to arrive in Panama city sometime in the early morning of May 1st.

Stay tuned tomorrow for those time-lapse videos.

Now thats a day I won’t forget soon.
